Efficiency for Access Design Challenge 2023–2024

An overview of Year Five of the Challenge

The Challenge launched for its fifth year in September 2023. This year, students from 17 universities are participating. View a list of the participating universities here.

The Challenge Brief 2023-24

The Challenge Brief is the main guidance document for all students who are participating in the competition. This document provides important background information on the off-grid appliance sector, the scope of the competition, examples of different technologies, key dates, student support, and the assessment framework. Read it here.

Concept Note

Once onboarded to the Challenge, students will need to submit a Concept Note, to give us an idea of the support you will need on your journey. You will receive feedback on your Concept Note, be paired with a mentor, and receive webinars and resources to help you design your appliance. We encourage you to submit your concept note within a month of the kick-off workshop.

Final Project

By 12 April 2024, student teams must submit a 4,000-word report (maximum) and three-minute video, which you will receive in depth feedback on. You will have a final assessment in the form of a pitch to a panel of experts in May.

Grand Final

Our Grand Final event will be held in June, and will close out the Challenge year. It is the culmination of the Efficiency for Access Design Challenge and allows us to celebrate participating students’ achievements. The event showcases some of the amazing submissions we receive during the competition, and awards students with the most innovative designs. You can watch last year’s Grand Final here.
