Celebrating International Day of Clean Energy
Efficiency for Access is proud to support International Day of Clean Energy, recognising the day’s role in promoting sustainable energy solutions.

What is International Day of Clean Energy?
International Day of Clean Energy is a global event dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the transition to sustainable, renewable energy sources to combat climate change and foster a greener future. The day highlights the importance of innovation and community action in accelerating clean energy adoption and improving energy access worldwide.
History
On 26th January 2009, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was established, with the occasion being marked by numerous groups this year aiming to raise awareness and drive action for a fair and inclusive transition to clean energy. The 2025 event will be the second International Day of Clean Energy, and is a key event in the wider United Nations’ Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2020–2030).
“Adopting clean energy is integral to the fight against climate change. A large chunk of the greenhouse gases that blanket the Earth and trap the Sun’s heat are generated through energy production, by burning fossil fuels (oil, coal, and gas) to generate electricity and heat.”
– United Nations’ Environment Programme

Accelerating a just and inclusive clean energy transition
Efficiency for Access is dedicated to accelerating clean energy access through the promotion of affordable, high-performing, and inclusive appliances. Our flagship initiative, the Low-Energy Inclusive Appliances (LEIA) programme, focuses on enhancing the efficiency, performance, availability, and affordability of various household and community electrical appliances and solar-powered technologies.
By supporting the development and deployment of these innovative solutions, the LEIA programme is helping to increase clean energy access, improve livelihoods, and enhance quality of life for underserved communities. We are proud to champion those dedicated to a clean energy future, and on International Day of Clean Energy, Efficiency for Access is celebrating a number of key causes that are working towards a brighter, more efficient future.
Here is a dedicated reading list highlighting key clean energy projects that Efficiency for Access has supported:
- Agsol: Solar-powered milling machines for use in small, rural communities with an aim to make the essential service of milling more efficient and affordable.
- Simusolar: Bridging the gap between clean energy and farming by providing clean energy equipment to farmers in off-grid areas.
- Tech Trends in Energy Access: Assessing the Solar Dryer Market: A research report exploring the potential of solar drying technology as a clean energy solution to reduce post-harvest food loss, promote sustainable agriculture, and improve livelihoods.
- Leave No One Behind: Research highlighting the gap in access to life-changing, off-grid solar appliances for millions worldwide, and opportunities to accelerate sector growth.
- Green Jobs for Rural Youth: Research showcasing transformative impact of solar-powered farm equipment by providing the first comprehensive analysis of employment trends in India, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda, along with actionable recommendations for governments and industry stakeholders.
In late 2023, Efficiency for Access launched Walk-In Cold Rooms: A Practitioner’s Technical Guide in collaboration with the International Institute of Refrigeration. Walk-in cold rooms help reduce post-harvest losses, enhance food security, stabilise prices, and boost farmer incomes. However, these cold storage solutions face challenges in remote regions with warm climates that lack reliable power and supply chain access.
