Less Waste, More Income as Kenya’s Dairy Farmers Reap the Rewards of Solar-Powered Equipment

When farmers in Naro Moru installed to solar-powered chillers and water heaters, they didn't just save energy, they transformed the way they work and what they earn.

What does clean energy look like for dairy farmers in Kenya?

Solio Dairy Cooperative in Naro Moru is a dairy collection and processing center that, with support from the DREEM Hub Kenya initiative led by Efficiency for Access and the Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC), became a site where farmers from across Kenya could come and see clean energy technologies in action, learn how they worked, and explore how to use them.

Farmers found that technologies like solar-powered milk chillers and water heaters could help them reduce milk losses, lower energy costs, and continue production during dry seasons. But the impact went beyond the technology itself. These solutions helped farmers protect their income, reduce waste, and build stronger, more reliable businesses.

The also project brought together farmers, financing and technology providers, and local governments, showing that making clean energy work for communities takes collaboration across the whole system.

And one thing became clear: when solutions are practical, reliable, and improve livelihoods, farmers are ready to adopt them.
