Access to safe and sustainable household refrigeration extends produce life and reduces food preparation time, which, in the Global South, benefits women and girls the most. However, high costs make off-grid refrigerators unaffordable for many rural households in sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, refrigerator units in Sub-Saharan Africa are costly, with only 4% of off-grid African households equipped with a refrigerator.
Supported by the Efficiency for Access Research and Development Fund, Sure Chill developed the GEN2 Smart Box, a sustainable technology designed to reduce compressor control system costs and boost energy efficiency. This technology aims to make solar-powered refrigerators more accessible, fostering economic and social benefits in low-income regions.
