Promethean Power: Transforming India’s Rural Dairy Sector Through Smart Decentralised Cooling
With support from the Efficiency for Access Research and Development Fund, Promethean set out to improve energy availability to India’s dairy sector.
India dominates global milk production, producing 22% of the world’s milk supply annually, mostly from smallholder farmers. However, small dairy farmers in remote, rural Indian villages face challenges accessing equitable dairy markets due to limited reliable electricity and milk chilling infrastructure.
Our Research and Development Fund supported Promethean Power in creating a groundbreaking solution for these issues. They developed a thermal energy storage system for milk chilling, advanced remote monitoring, and a cooling-as-a-service model. This decentralised cold chain technology is designed for off- and weak-grid areas, enhancing milk preservation, reducing spoilage, and boosting farmers’ incomes. Promethean’s approach supports sustainable rural livelihoods, strengthens resilience, and improves food security.
